Job Information
The Apprentice 3 provides manpower, knowledge and workmanship which are necessary to perform related job duties for proper construction, maintenance, and operation of the electric system. This position makes the correct application and use of all materials and equipment furnished in order to provide efficient, reliable service to the consumer in the operation and maintenance of the electric system.
+ Acquires, through training, a basic understanding of construction specifications and is essentially familiar with most phases of distribution line construction, equipment applications, tool application and equipment operations.
+ Performs all required construction and maintenance on non-energized portions of the system.
+ Performs all required construction and maintenance on energized overhead portions of the system under the direct supervision of a Journeyman lineman, Lead Journeyman, or Line Foreman.
+ Performs all required construction and maintenance on energized underground portions of the system under the direct supervision of a Journeyman Lineman, Lead Journeyman, Line Foreman, or Serviceman.
+ Assists in the training and direction of Apprentice 1, 1-A, 2 and 2-A linemen.
+ Develops skills in switching operations for maintenance and/or emergencies.
+ Develops skills and knowledge on how to read maps, prepare and interpret staking sheets and prepare required reports.
+ Learns the circuit and sectionalizing diagrams and becomes familiar with the proper operation and application of all sectionalizing devices used on the system.
+ Acquires proficiency in the effective and safe operating methods in the use of rubber gloves and sleeves.
+ Acquires, through training, a basic understanding of the operation of all electrical devices on the system.
+ Develops skills and techniques of troubleshooting line deficiencies. Takes corrective measures within the limitations set forth in this

job description.

+ Learns and develops skills and knowledge in the placement of poles in and around energized lines.

+ Acquires proficiency in the effective and safe operation of the extendo.

+ Applies rescue techniques by utilizing First Aid and CPR certifications.

+ Performs after-hour duty assignments and participates in the Cooperative's "on-call" rotation as directed by his/her supervisor.

+ Conducts self in a manner which will lead to the best possible working relationship between oneself and other members of the crew or other employees of the Cooperative.

+ Responsible for being properly clothed and equipped while maintaining belt, hooks and other personal tools in a safe condition.

+ Complies with all of the Cooperative's Safety Rules and uses safe working practice and methods.

+ Complies with all traffic laws, rules and regulations while operating a Cooperative vehicle and practices proper traffic procedures.

+ Responsible for the proper care of company equipment, tools and property.

+ Complies with the proper operating practices in the use of the two-way radio.

+ Responds to member and consumer inquiries and resolves problems and/or directs them to the supervisor or appropriate personnel; maintains good relations in all contacts with the general public.

+ Climbs poles and utilizes lineman tools while working on poles.

+ Receives and accepts training, instruction and advice from assigned supervisor and cooperates with him/her in performing assigned tasks.

+ Participates in job site tailgate discussions and monthly safety meetings.

+ Performs additional duties as assigned by Management.



+ High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Degree in electrical power and distribution or equivalent is preferred.

+ Completion of 2 years of related field work experience as an Apprentice Lineman is required.

+ Completion of book 2 of the Merchant Job Training and Safety Program with a score of at least 70% is required.

+ Have and maintain a valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License with no restrictions, apart from corrective lenses, is required.

+ Basic mechanical aptitude and electrical line construction knowledge is required.

+ Familiar with the Cooperative systems geography and system maps.

+ Familiar with the National Electrical Safety Code and RUS Materials Specifications.

+ Skills in the underground and overhead line operation.

+ Skills in pole climbing and using lineman tools while working on a pole.

+ Skills and knowledge in the placement of poles in and around energized lines.

+ Skills in the operation of equipment and apparatus used in the line construction such as a backhoe, trencher, digger truck and basket truck.

+ Knowledge of the proper and safe use of the tools and equipment used in line construction maintenance, both energized and de-energized.

+ Trained and able to perform First Aid, CPR, Pole Top, and Bucket Truck rescue at required intervals.

+ Ability to perform work out of a bucket within the recommended weight limitations set by the manufacturer, minus liner and tools.

+ Ability to conduct work with an electric distribution system, including the installation of meters, transformers, voltage regulators, capacitors, sectionalizers and reclosers.

+ Ability to properly and safely use the tools and equipment used in line construction maintenance, as well as live conductors of all voltages.

+ Ability to operate assigned equipment including buckets, forklift, backhoe, trencher, winches and high compression tools.

+ Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, staking sheets, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.

+ Ability to complete routine reports and other paperwork, as directed.

+ Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, as well as fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.

+ Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

+ Ability to carry out instructions presented in written, oral or diagram form.

+ Ability to recognize and solve problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

+ Ability to organize, multi-task, plan and set priorities with minimal supervision.

+ Ability to encourage and build mutual trust, respect and cooperation amongst team members.

+ Ability to exercise good judgment with a strong attention to detail.

+ Ability to handle confidential information with integrity.

+ Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across all levels of the Cooperative.

+ Demonstrate poise, tact, and diplomacy in daily interaction with Cooperative members and staff.

Physical Demands:

+ Frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk and hear.

+ Frequently lifts and/or moves up to fifty (50) pounds and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to one hundred (100) pounds.

+ Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

+ Speaking to others to convey information effectively.

Work Environment:

+ Frequently exposed to high, precarious places, outside weather conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, and risk of electrical shock.

+ Occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, or airborne particles, and vibration.

+ Moderate noise level.

+ This position is subject to on-call as required which may include night, weekend and/or holiday work. Employees are required to report to the Cooperative within thirty (30) minutes after receiving notice.
