Job Summary:

Military and Family Life Counselors (MFLC) provide in-person, confidential, non-medical counseling services in support of the MFLC program, to support all Active and Reserve component military service members and their families, including severely injured service
members and their families. The non-medical counseling services are provided by licensed behavioral health counselors. Non-medical counseling is defined as short term counseling that is not appropriate for individuals needing in depth clinical therapy. Non-medical
counseling is supportive in nature and addresses: conditions of living; life skills; improving relationships at home and at work; stress management; adjustment issues, such as those related to returning from deployment; marital problems; parenting; and fear,
grief and loss. MFLC counselors provide face-to-face, worldwide support through either rotational, surge, or on-demand assignments. Rotational assignments provide counseling support for up to 12 months. Surge support is provided for a specified period of time
for up to 90 days. On-demand support is provided for a specified period of time, typically one to three days. ***NOTE: This position is contingent and does not represent a current opening, but will be used to identify candidates with skills and experiences
for positions within Zeiders that frequently become available. ***

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

o Provide non-medical counseling to eligible individuals, couples, families, and groups, to include assessment (to include diagnostically sound determination if client is in the MFLC Program Scope of Care,), brief, solution-focused, psycho-educational counseling
techniques and interventions, behavioral based counseling plans, and knowledge of available military and community resources for appropriate referral

o Comply with all state and federal law and instruction regarding Duty to Warn, Duty to Protect, and Mandated Reporting

o Competence in performing "walk around" consultation: reaching out and engaging service and family members, providing information and creating awareness about MFLC Program services

o Serve as a conduit between the MFLC Program and Command Points of Contact. Ability to engage and develop trusted relationships with military leadership in order to best provide services that are germane to their service members and families

o Facilitate presentations to small and large groups of civilians, Service members, and Commanders on the following topics, to include: anger/stress management, conflict resolution, relationship issues, deployment stress, parenting, loss and grief, communication

Education and/or Experience Qualifications:

o Master's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Marriage, Family Therapy, or Counseling

o Valid unrestricted behavioral health counseling license or certification from a state, the District of Columbia, a U.S. territory or commonwealth that grants authority to provide counseling services as an independent practitioner at the full clinical practice
level in their respective fields

o Able to obtain Government Security clearances: Child National Agency Check and Inquiries (CNACI) Some positions require a Security clearance (Secret Level)

o Understanding, sensitivity, and empathy for service members and their families. Ability to develop trusting, helping relationships. Ability to work effectively with individuals and families from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds

o Counselors must work independently to develop, implement, and evaluate safety and intervention plans to meet individual and family needs.

o Ability to intervene in crisis situations, using sound professional judgment, ethical practice, and common sense.

o The Counselor will operate within established guidelines of the military services family support and quality of life programs.

o Working knowledge of military, state, federal, and local laws and resources

o Possess a solid understanding of military culture and lifestyle.

o Must possess the computer/ technology skills necessary to enter data in required provider reports and utilize information systems to prepare required reports and information.

o Strong skills in written and verbal communication, and assessment.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

o Works in office areas. Sits, stands, bends, lifts, and moves intermittently during working hours. Uses personal computer, telephones, copiers, printers and other office equipment. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Able to walk
a moderate distance. The noise level is moderately quiet.

o The work environment is consistent with the physical settings encountered on a military installation, military housing, and surrounding areas. Walk around counseling and coaching requires a knowledge of the installation/housing area, the ability to find appropriate
locations for such activities, and an awareness of military specific cultural norms and practices allowing the MFLC to seamlessly integrate into these settings.
